Wissenschaftliche Forschung zur Iridologie
Eine gut kontrollierte wissenschaftliche Bewertung der Iridologie hat völlig negative Ergebnisse gezeigt, wobei alle strengen Doppelblindtests keine statistische Signifikanz für ihre Behauptungen feststellen konnten. Im Jahr 2015 veröffentlichte das Gesundheitsministerium der australischen Regierung die Ergebnisse einer Überprüfung alternativer Therapien, bei der festgestellt werden sollte, ob welche für eine Krankenversicherung geeignet sind. Die Iridologie war eine von 17 evaluierten Therapien, für die keine eindeutigen Beweise für die Wirksamkeit gefunden wurden. Eine deutsche Studie aus dem Jahr 1957, in der mehr als 4.000 Irisfotos von mehr als 1.000 Menschen gemacht wurden, kam zu dem Schluss, dass die Iridologie als diagnostisches Instrument nicht nützlich war. Im Jahr 1979 gelang es Bernard Jensen, einem führenden amerikanischen Iridologen, und zwei anderen Befürwortern der Iridologie nicht, die Grundlage ihrer Praxis zu ermitteln, als sie Fotos der Augen von untersuchten 143 Patienten, um herauszufinden, welche Patienten eine Nierenfunktionsstörung hatten. Bei 48 der Patienten wurde eine Nierenerkrankung diagnostiziert, bei den übrigen Patienten war die Nierenfunktion normal. Basierend auf ihrer Analyse der Patienten’ Mithilfe der Iris konnten die drei Iridologen nicht erkennen, welche Patienten eine Nierenerkrankung hatten und welche nicht. Ein Iridologe kam beispielsweise zu dem Schluss, dass 88 % der gesunden Patienten eine Nierenerkrankung hatten, während ein anderer anhand seiner Irisanalyse urteilte, dass 74 % der Patienten, die eine künstliche Nierenbehandlung benötigten, normal waren.
Im British Medical Journal wurde eine weitere Studie veröffentlicht, in der 39 Patienten ausgewählt wurden, deren Gallenblase am nächsten Tag wegen des Verdachts auf Gallensteine entfernt werden sollte. Die Studie wählte auch eine Gruppe von Personen als Kontrollgruppe aus, die keine erkrankten Gallenblasen hatten. Eine Gruppe von 5 Iridologen untersuchte eine Reihe von Objektträgern beider Gruppen’ Iris. Die Iridologen konnten nicht richtig erkennen, welche Patienten Gallenblasenprobleme hatten und welche gesunde Gallenblasen hatten. Beispielsweise diagnostizierte einer der Iridologen, dass 49 % der Patienten mit Gallensteinen Gallensteine hätten und 51 % keine Gallensteine hätten. Der Autor kam zu dem Schluss: “…Diese Studie zeigte, dass die Iridologie kein nützliches diagnostisches Hilfsmittel ist.”Edzard Ernst stellte im Jahr 2000 die Frage: “Funktioniert die Iridologie? Diese Suchstrategie führte zu 77 Publikationen zum Thema Iridologie. Alle unkontrollierten Studien und mehrere der nicht maskierten Experimente legten nahe, dass die Iridologie ein gültiges diagnostisches Instrument war. Die folgende Diskussion bezieht sich auf die vier kontrollierten, maskierten Bewertungen der diagnostischen Validität der Iridologie. Zusammenfassend lässt sich sagen, dass nur wenige kontrollierte Studien mit maskierter Bewertung der diagnostischen Validität veröffentlicht wurden. Keiner hat einen Nutzen aus der Iridologie festgestellt.”
In einer Studie aus dem Jahr 2005 wurde der Nutzen der Iridologie bei der Diagnose häufiger Krebsarten getestet. Ein erfahrener Iridologe untersuchte die Augen von insgesamt 110 Probanden, von denen 68 Personen nachweislich an Brust-, Eierstock-, Gebärmutter-, Prostata- oder Darmkrebs erkrankt waren und bei 42 Personen keine medizinischen Hinweise auf Krebs vorlagen. Der Arzt, der sein Geschlecht oder seine medizinischen Details nicht kannte, wurde gebeten, für jede Person eine Diagnose vorzuschlagen, und seine Ergebnisse wurden dann mit der bekannten medizinischen Diagnose jedes Probanden verglichen. Das Fazit der Studie lautete: “Die Iridologie hatte für die Diagnose der in dieser Studie untersuchten Krebsarten keinen Wert.”

Geschichte der Iridologie

Was ist Iridologie?
Iridology (sometimes referred to as iris diagnosis) is based on the bizarre belief that each area of the body is represented by a corresponding area in the iris of the eye (the colored area around the pupil). According to this viewpoint, a person’s state of health and disease can be diagnosed from the color, texture, and location of various pigment flecks in the eye. Iridology practitioners claim to diagnose “Ungleichgewichte” that can be treated with vitamins, minerals, herbs, and similar products. Some also claim that the eye markings can reveal a complete history of past illnesses as well as previous treatment. One textbook, for example, states that a white triangle in the appropriate area indicates appendicitis, but a black speck indicates that the appendix had been removed by surgery. Iridology charts—dozens of which exist—vary somewhat in the location and interpretation of their iris signs. Some iridologists use a computer to help them analyze eye photographs and select the products they recommend. Sclerology is similar to iridology but interprets the shape and condition of blood vessels on the white portion (sclera) of the eyeball.
